Cox Graduate Programs Inclement Weather and Emergency Policy

The Cox Graduate Programs Office has developed the following plan to ensure academic continuity in the event of adverse or unexpected weather conditions that lead to delays, class cancellations, or campus closures.

General Policy

In the event of adverse weather conditions or unexpected events, Cox Graduate Programs will prioritize academic continuity by transitioning to a virtual learning environment via Zoom, rather than canceling or rescheduling classes. The following guidelines will apply:
•    If the University delays or cancels classes or closes campus due to inclement weather or other adverse events, all classes will shift to a virtual format.
•    If the University remains open despite anticipated inclement weather, classes will proceed as scheduled, with accommodation for those unable to attend in person.
•    Students experiencing power outages or other disruptions due to adverse weather will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine appropriate accommodations.
•    Students enrolled in online classes should plan to meet at their regularly scheduled times unless notified otherwise by their professor or a member of the Graduate Cox Student Enrollment and Engagement team.

Transition to Virtual Learning

In the event of a shift to virtual learning:
•    Students, faculty, and staff will be notified that classes will be conducted via Zoom.
•    Faculty are expected to create and share a Zoom link in Canvas to ensure quick and easy access for students.

Special Circumstances

If campus remains open but you cannot travel due to weather OR if you experience power or internet outages due to extreme conditions:
•    Inform your faculty member and advisor by email and copy Graduate Student Enrollment and Engagement at gradcox@smu.edu on the message. This ensures that if your faculty member or advisor is also experiencing power or internet issues, someone else can assist with your concerns.

Undergraduate Cox Faculty

•    Faculty teaching undergraduate Cox students will adhere to the Provost Office’s Inclement Weather and Emergency Operations Guidelines for maintaining academic continuity
