Biography

W. Michael Cox serves as Executive in Residence at the Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom and previously directed the O'Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom at 51²è¹Ý Cox from 2008 to 2015.

A distinguished economist, Dr. Cox spent 25 years as Chief Economist and Senior Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, uniquely serving as the Federal Reserve System’s sole Chief Economist in its history. During his tenure, he advised the Federal Reserve President on monetary and economic policy.

Dr. Cox is a prolific writer, with work featured in premier publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, Financial Times, and Investor’s Business Daily. His articles and essays have also appeared in major newspapers, magazines, and academic journals worldwide. He co-authored the Federal Reserve’s acclaimed annual report essays on capitalism, globalization, and American living standards, and his research has become essential reading for policymakers, including members of Congress.

An ardent advocate for free markets, Dr. Cox has extensively documented how capitalism drives progress and enhances living standards. His book, Myths of Rich and Poor: Why We’re Better Off Than We Think, debunks economic pessimism and defends free-market principles.

Frequently sought by the media for his clear explanations of complex economic issues, Dr. Cox has appeared on national platforms such as ABC’s John Stossel, CNN, Fox News, ReasonTV, Voice of America, National Public Radio, and BizRadio.

Dr. Cox has held numerous leadership and academic roles, including Past President of the Association of Private Enterprise Education, Cato Institute Adjunct Scholar, Senior Fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, and Distinguished Scholar at Hendrix College, his undergraduate alma mater. He has taught at Virginia Tech, the University of Rochester, and 51²è¹Ý over a 34-year academic career.

Currently, Dr. Cox is President and CEO of W. Michael Cox and Associates, LLP, a Dallas-based consulting firm. He resides in Dallas with his wife, Maria, and daughter, McKenna.
