Biography
Dr. Brett Story serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at 51²è¹Ý. Dr. Story received his B.S., M.S.,
and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University with a specialty in structural engineering and infrastructure monitoring. and is an expert in structural engineering mechanics. After obtaining his doctoral degree, Dr. Story joined the Center for Railway Research at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute as Assistant Director and simultaneously served as a lecturer in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. Dr. Story joined 51²è¹Ý in 2013. Dr. Story’s passion for teaching and research centers on educating students (inside the classroom, laboratory, and in the field) and challenging students to explore and master concepts of problem solving as related to applied engineering problems. His research interests comprise a combination of analytical computer modeling, experimental sensing methods and machine learning algorithms for infrastructure evaluation. Students working with Dr. Story engage in interdisciplinary research efforts in fields ranging from engineering to archeology to education. Dr. Story is funded by the National Science Foundation, industry, and local government. Dr. Story received the Golden Mustang Outstanding Faculty Award from 51²è¹Ý in 2019.
Current research efforts include development and implementation of smart infrastructure techniques for assessing infrastructure components and systems. This research exists at the intersection of structural mechanics, machine learning, and measurement technologies. Dr. Story oversees the Smart Infrastructure Innovation Initiative (S3I) which simultaneously addresses technical challenges, but also provides pathways for high school students of diverse backgrounds to contribute to STEM efforts in smart infrastructure.
