Admissions

If you are interested in applying to the 51²è¹Ý Meadows Division of Music, please read the following information, then start your application by clicking the button at the bottom of the page.

In order to pursue the B.M., B.A. or a minor in music at 51²è¹Ý, applicants must apply and gain admission to 51²è¹Ý and, in a separate application, to the Division of Music. It is recommended that applicants apply to 51²è¹Ý and to Meadows in the same semester. Audition registration is accessed through the Meadows Music Application.

Pre-Audition Day Visit

We welcome all candidates to begin their visit to 51²è¹Ý on the Fridays preceding auditions, during the optional Pre-Audition Day Visit, to become better acquainted with our facilities, students and faculty before their audition experience.

Audition Dates, Types and Deadlines for 2024-25

Meadows offers two ways of auditioning: live on campus, or sending in a recorded audition. Registration for Music auditions is found within the online Meadows Music Application. After your Meadows application has been submitted, you will receive an email with a link to your online status page where you can log in and register for your audition or submit your recorded audition.

Live On-Campus Auditions

  • Your Meadows Music Application and audition registration must be submitted by or before 7 days prior to audition date. Note that in order to register for an on-campus audition, you must first submit your Meadows application, after which you will receive an email with a link to your status page where you can log in and register for your audition. Since auditions are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, we recommend registering for an audition at least 4-6 weeks in advance of your preferred audition date. Audition registration closes once audition slots have filled or one week prior to the audition, whichever comes first.
  • Music Education, Music Therapy and Music Composition applicants will interview with faculty via Zoom separately from their on-campus audition and will receive information on how to register for the interview.
  • All Voice applicants must first submit a pre-screen video; see details further below.
  • Most 51²è¹Ý On-Campus Music Auditions are offered on Saturdays. Candidates and their families are strongly encouraged to attend an Information Session at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Faculty and current students will present information on our degree plans, performances, scholarships and will hold a Q&A. The Saturday audition day schedule will also include an optional campus tour at 12 p.m.
  • Applicants’ set audition time will be sent the Monday prior to their audition day. For any scheduling concerns, please contact meadowsadmission@smu.edu or 214-768-3217.

Recorded Audition Deadlines

  • If you are applying to 51²è¹Ý as Early Action, Early Decision I, or Spring Transfer, your Meadows application and recorded audition are due by or before November 1.
  • If you are applying to 51²è¹Ý as Regular Decision, Early Decision II, or Fall Transfer, your Meadows application and recorded audition are due by or before January 15.

Music Education, Music Therapy, and Music Composition Applicants

In addition to auditioning on their primary instrument, Music Education, Music Therapy and Music Composition applicants must interview with faculty. Applicants will receive information on how to register for the interview after they submit their application. Music Education and Music Therapy interviews are held virtually on Zoom. Music Composition interviews are held both virtually on Zoom and in-person on audition days.

Music Education, Music Therapy, and Music Composition applicants are required to submit a music teacher recommendation within the Music Application. Applicants can upload this directly to their application or have their recommender email their recommendation to meadowsadmission@smu.edu.

Music Composition applicants are required to submit a composition portfolio.

Music Composition - Traditional Track portfolio requirements:

  • 2-5 scores in PDF file format with accompanying YouTube/Vimeo videos of performances (live preferred, but MIDI realizations are acceptable)

Applying to 51²è¹Ý

All music applicants must apply to Meadows School of the Arts and, in a separate application, also apply to 51²è¹Ý. We recommend applying to both within the same semester. See details and deadlines for 51²è¹Ý applications here.

Transfer students

  • Fall Transfer: Apply to 51²è¹Ý by April 1, audition during the posted on-campus audition dates or by recorded audition.
  • Spring Transfer: Apply to 51²è¹Ý by November 1, audition by/on December.

Note that all transfer students are required to complete college algebra or a college-level math course before transferring to 51²è¹Ý. We strongly encourage you to plan ahead and check with your transfer admission counselor to ensure that you have satisfied admission requirements. Plan ahead to optimize your possibility of earning a Transfer Scholarship and check out the Transfer Equivalency Guides.

Pro Tip: Early Action versus Early Decision 51²è¹Ý application

Early Decision is a binding agreement to attend 51²è¹Ý if you are accepted to the university, even if you are not also accepted to the Meadows Music Division. For those who wish to apply by the November 1 “Early” deadline, we recommend that music applicants select “Early Action” instead of “Early Decision.” By applying Early Action, music applicants can keep their options open while expressing strong interest in 51²è¹Ý.
