Breakout 1 – (Grades 6-8)

This is a hands-on session designed to help teachers investigate the impact of strategically presenting mathematics and building the relationship between concrete models and tabular representations. Participants will experience activities created to support students conceptual understanding of fraction operations, equivalence, and decimal-fraction relationships.

Breakout 2 – (Grades 3-5)

Conceptual Understanding is built by comparing and contrasting various representations of an idea. In this session, participants will work through a purposeful sequence of questions about fractions that encourages students to compare and contrast multiple representations of their thinking and leads to conceptual understanding upon which they can build number sense and procedural fluency.

Breakout 3 – (Grades K-2)

Engage in research-based instructional strategies designed to help develop students' conceptual understanding of representing and solving addition and subtraction problems while developing procedural fluency.

Breakout 1 – (all grades, coaching session) 

Coaching is not as simple as A, B, C or 1, 2, 3! In this session, participants will explore the complexities of change and the coach's role in being a change agent.

Breakout 2 – (all grades)

When you think about math teaching you think about math problems, (or "tasks"). But there's actually quite a bit of variety in mathematical tasks and that variety has a big impact on what students learn.

Breakout 3 – (Grades K-6)

Number talks are brief conversations around purposefully designed computation problems. During this break-out session participants will learn about the key characteristics of successful number talks and how they can be used as a routine to build students' procedural fluency through conceptual understanding.

Closing Session:

How do your students show that they understand, that they really understand? How do you know, really know, when they understand? Explore three elements of instructional design that build on modeling and multiple representations, discourse, and meaningful tasks to support conceptual understanding. These three elements serve to equip students while informing teachers about student learning.
