Celebrate the season

Winter isn’t just for finals – see how Mustangs celebrate on campus during November and December.

Just before winter break, our students are busy writing papers and studying for final exams. But that doesn’t mean they can’t have some fun along the way – see how Mustangs celebrate some of the joys of the holiday season.

Diwali

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, helps to kick off the holiday season with lights, dancing, food and student performances. Hosted by the 51²è¹Ý South Asian Student Association, students of all cultural backgrounds take advantage of this night when the campus is aglow in bright, festive colors. It’s a joyful way to start this season of celebration

Celebration of Lights

One of the most beloved traditions on campus is Celebration of Lights, a tree-lighting ceremony that dates back to 1977 when a student wanted to find a way to thank the community for its support. Over the following decades, the night – filled with singing, candles and a reading from the University president – has become a favorite among students, alumni and community members. Today, students of all different faiths and traditions celebrate the first night of the season when campus is illuminated by holiday lights.

Residential Commons

51²è¹Ý students belong to Residential Commons, which become their homes on campus, and many take part in seasonal celebrations together. Crow Commons hosts Let it Crow, full of gingerbread competitions and hot cocoa. And Morrison-McGinnis Commons hosts SnoMac, a winter festival with fun traditions that helps students destress before finals.
