Accessing the Departmental Email Account
The account can be accessed as you have permissions to the account. Once permission has been granted to a departmental account, you can access that account online at webmail.smu.edu or using an email client like Outlook or Mail. Full instructions can be found below.
Outlook for Windows
- Click File in the top-left corner of Outlook
- Click +Add Account below the account selection
- Enter your departmental account email address and click Connect
- If prompted, select Exchange as the service
- If asked to enter your Microsoft account, enter your 51²è¹Ý email address.
(Note: School specific email addresses are not valid. Email address should be formatted as @smu.edu and not @mail.smu.edu) - You will be presented with the 51²è¹Ý Single Sign On screen. Sign in with your 51²è¹Ý credentials and approve the Duo Mobile prompt or choose to enter a passcode from your Duo Mobile app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Select Yes, trust Browser
- Outlook will now sign in to your departmental 51²è¹Ý email account
"New" Outlook for macOS
- Launch Outlook.
- Select the Outlook menu in the top left corner next to the apple icon.
- In the Outlook menu, select Preferences (or Settings... for users on macOS Ventura).
- Click on Accounts
- Select the + icon and then > Open Shared Mailbox
- Search for department account email address and select it
- Click Add
Legacy Outlook for macOS
- Launch the Outlook.
- Select the Outlook menu in the top left corner next to the apple icon.
- In the Outlook menu, select Preferences (or Settings... for users on macOS Ventura).
- Click on Accounts
- Select your primary 51²è¹Ý email account in the list on the left
- Click Advanced... on the bottom right corner
- Click Delegates in the new window
- Click the + icon below Open these additional mailboxes:
- Search for department account email address and select it
- Click Add
- Click Ok
Other mail clients and iOS devices
Unfortunately, due to changes in security protocols, accessing departmental emails accounts on iOS is no longer an available option. Please contact the IT Help Desk if you need any assistance with configuring Outlook or Webmail for departmental account access.
