Keeping Equity in the Equation: Access for All Students
The 8th annual Research in Mathematics Education conference, The Power of Problem Solving, had 278 attendees. Attendees joined us for a day of professional development to learn about equity and accessibility in the mathematics classroom with a focus on English language learners, gifted students, struggling students and transient or homeless students. The day began with an opening panel moderated by Dr. Frank Hernandez. Panelists included Martha Bujanda, Markita Tillman, and Sagar Desai. Dr. Dara Rossi presented at our mid-morning session and discusses social and emotional learning from the inside out. Our day concluded with a presentation on connecting social and emotional learning to position students as mathematically competent, by our keynote speaker, Dr. Robert Berry, President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
