Weber Retirement

RETIRED: Shlomo Weber,  Robert H. and Nancy Dedman Trustee Professor of Economics, in May 2016. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Economics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem  in 1979. He joined 51²è¹Ý in 1993 as professor; earlier he taught at Haifa University in Israel and York University in Toronto. An eminent scholar in cooperative game theory, his work extended to various applications and eclectic mix of interests including political economy and the study of diversity and languages. He published more than 100 articles in leading journals in economics and political science, including Econometrica, American Political Science Review, the Review of Economic Studies and the Journal of Economic Theory. His recent book “How many languages do we need?” was published by the Princeton University Press; he co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Russian Economy and the Palgrave Handbook of Economics of Languages. At 51²è¹Ý, he served as Chair of the Economics department (1994 - 2000) and as Director of the Johnson Center. He served as academic or research director in various academic institutions across the globe including the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics in Belgium, the International School of Economics in Tbilisi, Georgia and the New Economic School in Moscow (where he is currently the Provost and Acting Rector). He received numerous international awards and fellowships including the Humboldt prize for outstanding foreign scientists in Germany, and the Russian National Mega Grant Award.
