Q&A with Chris
What is the best part about your current position?
I'm in mobile games where a well-designed UI and UX are critical. As a result, the choices I make and work I do matters, which is both rewarding and slightly terrifying.
What is the most interesting or enjoyable thing that you have gotten to do in your career?
The most enjoyable part of my career is working with a diverse set of franchises. It's a perk of being at Disney in particular. From Star Wars to Toy Story, there are so many great IPs I love and grew up with that I now get to work on!
Why did you choose to get your education from the Guildhall?
I already had a background in game programming before going to the Guildhall, but I also had a passion for design that I didn't get to pursue as much. There aren't that many design programs out there and even fewer good ones.
How did the Guildhall prepare you for your career in gaming, and what impact has it had on your life?
The team game projects were the best thing to prepare me for the industry. There's no better way to learn game development than to...well, develop games. I learned communication skills, compromise, and added valuable work to my portfolio. I also bonded with my teammates and have friendships that will hopefully last the rest of my life.
What advice would you offer for students looking to get into gaming?
Have patience and be humble. You're being well-educated and well-trained for the industry, but it's still very hard to get in. It may take a few months to get a job. You can't give up though because once you get that first job, the experience from it will make it easier to get the next one. People will even start approaching you with job offers!
